Article design & art direction on Guardian.co.uk in response to world news

Europes Dreamers

I led the design and creative direction of The Guardian’s mini-series; ‘Europe’s Dreamers’. Many of us have heard about the American Dreamers, but Europe has its own 'dreamer' generation: harsh migration policies have created a generation of undocumented young Europeans. A new Guardian series hears from those who want the right to build a future. I designed all articles within the mini-series, as well as commissioning a set of of illustrations to capture the spirit of the series and to introduce the opening piece.

I designed and animated a series of short animations for Feast’s instagram stories. Previously this platform was extremely underused, and I saw an opportunity to improve engagement and to promote each week’s issue. This provides the opportunity to include swipe up links directly to the recipes on Guardian.co.uk - greatly improving traffic to online articles and encouraging an onward journey for the user.

Working report 2019

The Working Report is an annual piece intended to inform readers into the workings of the organisation that produces The Guardian, The Observer, and The Guardian editions in the US and Australia, over the last year.

I was tasked with the online design and art direction of the 2019 report. This included designing the look and feel of the piece, as well as working closely with on-site developers to produce the finalised live version, which can be viewed here.

I wanted the piece to feel celebratory in it’s aesthetic and as such I commissioned an illustrator to work on a series of energetic visuals that encapsulated the ideas and themes mentioned throughout the report. This involved setting a clear brief, outlining deliverables, timescale and budget all within a two-week turnaround. It was also key for the visuals to work successfully across all breakpoints, so this was an important consideration throughout rounds of testing.

Best of the 21st century - Art Direction & design

Each year the Guardian’s culture team put together a series of articles on the theme Best of the 21st century so far, to publish in the first week of September. I was tasked with designing and creating visuals for all 10 articles, including best films, albums, architecture and dance. I also styled every article using an in-house article composer, creating an immersive lead image to introduce each article and a list-style with 50 entries to follow.
