The Guardian
I designed and created an award winning recipe app prototype in response to the brief:
Explore new methods of interpreting and displaying the vast amounts of data on theguardian.co.uk
Over the course of two days I carried out in-depth competitor research and gave careful consideration to how users would respond and interact with the app both on the go and whilst at home in the kitchen. I developed ideas and solutions to issue’s based on my personal experience of the current Guardian recipes and designed a fully responsive design prototype to present. The idea sparked a positive response and went on to win two awards; ‘Best overall hack’ and ‘Best conceptual hack’.
The Design & Prototype
The app homepage leads with a swipe-through gallery of beautifully presented recipes to inspire the user and to encourage a journey of exploration throughout the app.
Filters give the user the freedom to view content by season, budget, dietary requirements and more. With this in mind, the app will come to learn users likes and dislikes over time and begin recommending recipes more suited to individual tastes.
While the recipes alone might make it tough to choose what you want to whip up, the interface is simple. Each recipe has a brief description, a tab for ‘ingredients’ and a tab for' ‘method’, making it easy for users to switch back and forth and to avoid those irritating scrolls mid-way through cooking.
Additionally the ‘cooking mode’ feature presents visual step-by-step instructions to any recipe and keeps the users phone’s screen awake while it does to avoid interruptions.
Users can also shop for recipe ingredients easily within the app, by tapping ‘add to shopping list’. The shopping list feature allows users to view ingredients by aisle or by recipe, ensuring a smooth shopping experience in stores and the option to purchase ingredients online with the checkout with Ocado feature (a partnership opportunity not to be missed).
